There are a couple of things you can do.

First, check with your ISP and see if they offer any filtering for your e-mail. My ISP has this type of filter and I never get any infected e-mails from my e-mail account.

Second, make sure you have a good antivirus program installed and make sure you keep it updated! I use the free antivirus program, AVG and it has prevented my system from becoming infected with any viruses. In fact, most of the time, it removes the virus from the e-mail message before it allows me
to read the e-mail.

The final thing you can do, is turn off the auto preview in Outlook Express. You can do this by clicking on "View" then on "Layout". You will see the "Window Layout Properties" dialog. In the bottom half of the window, there is a section for "Preview Pane". Just remove the check mark in front of "Show preview pane" and click "OK". Now, you will have to double click on your messages to open them.

When I created my website, I went on the premise of "wanting to learn how to do it" as I experience the essence of building my business.  I realize now, that even though I learned quite a bit, it did slow my progress down.  Read on, I'll tell you want I mean.

A Little History First

After attempting to do typing on the Internet -- you're right -- my first newbie scam.  It wasn't a true scam, because I was paid.  However, I put in long hours for very, very little pay.  Does that read green, naive newbie all over it?  Yes, I'm afraid it does. Needless to say, I gave that up and began looking for something that would give me a viable income -- affiliate marketing was the answer.  Thus, my adventure began.

Getting a Web host and Domain

Well, after much reading, I realized I needed to get a web host and a domain if I was looking for a long-haul attempt at making it in affiliate marketing.  I found a pretty good web host, paid for my domain -- And, now I was ready to build my website...

My first advise here is -- If you are inexperienced in web construction and you want a quick presence online, I would go with a web host that has web tools which includes Site Studio.  It saves you time, money and gets you up and moving quickly.

Building My Website

I decided to use FrontPage (with a dash of HTML) to create my website -- in my first attempt.  Well, my first attempt was beyond words -- no one wanted to hurt my feelings -- the website was beyond bad and the color was what I call Medicine Yellow. But I was still in the glow, and I must say, working
with blinders on.  (This was my first mistake, my knowledge was limited -- I should have utilized Site Studio that was available to me.)

Needless to say, my first attempt did not stay up long.  I went back to work, restructuring my ugly site -- my second attempt.  I changed the color to a dark green with a base of gray.  At the time it looked good, I thought.  I actually got, "you're improving" from a friend.  But somehow, it looked, well --downtrodden.

Third restructuring came when -- after a year, I came upon an article that stated, "if you are using Times Roman -- even though it is easy to read, it reads amateur all over it."  My first internal thought was, "Crap, I've got to do my website over again."

So, once again, I began restructuring my site. This time around, I decided to go with a lighter green for my website (just as well, I was going to have to change everything anyway), revamped by Google Ads (4 times), and changed the lettering to "Arial".

By the way, it has been said that either "Georgia" or "Arial" are the two fonts that will give your website a professional look.  And you know -- they were right. After changing from "Times Roman" to "Arial" -- it gave my website a cleaner and more professional look.

Color as well, is important to your website -- it is part of your total presentation of your site to prospective visitors.  How important is color -- if they don't like it, they are just a click away from removing your site from their vision.

After all the overhauling and tweaking of my website, I believe it is now presentable, brighter and personable to my visitors. However, I, as well as you, should realize that you are never done with your website. You should always be looking at ways to improve the appearance, products, and service available to your visitors.

Becoming An Affiliate

In the first couple of months after I had had added the google adsense code onto some of my websites, I would go and check how much it had earned on a particular day and would be happy if it was over ten dollars. The average daily figure at this stage was around five or six dollars.

I wanted to find ways of attracting more visitors to these websites which in turn I believed would help me to increase my adsense earnings. I also thought about having a number of new sites built for the same reasons.

One day I was very happy as I had made sixteen dollars, this was the most I had ever made in one day. I live in the UK and this would equate to be worth about nine pounds. Later that evening my wife asked if I would be willing to go to the shops to buy her some cigarettes. I was quite happy to go as I also needed to buy some for myself. When I arrived at the shop, I asked the shopkeeper for the forty cigarettes and he in return stated how much it would cost. This amount was more than the nine pounds I had made that day on adsense.

Even though I was well aware of how much a packet of cigarettes would cost, this still came as a bit of a shock to me. There I am working very hard in an attempt to increase my adsense earnings and then go about throwing what money I have made down the drain by smoking these fags.

This was enough to give me the inspiration to stop smoking, I am not trying to say it is easy but knowing that over a course of a year I am likely to save around a thousand pounds was a big help to me.

My wife has also been very determined and has managed to quit smoking. We now live in a much healthier environment and can now afford to have a holiday abroad each year.

My take on auto surf programs is that they work, but we never know when the administrator is going to take down the program or run with the money.  Usually auto surf programs will offer a return on your initial investment that may range anywhere from 10% of 10 days or 15% over 15 days.  It's nearly impossible for a company to keep up with these high returns for such a long time and a lot of them rely on new business.

There are a few new auto surf programs popping up such as Alien Trust and Phoenix Surf, however I would be reluctant to invest any type of money with these programs given the past of Studio Traffic and 12 Daily Pro.  At the same time, I do believe they will pay out; it's just a matter of time before the program actually crashes.

If you're looking to generate any substantial income online, look to find solid programs that have existed for years.  There are tons of programs available online and I'll be the first to admit that the majority of them do not work.  However over the past few years I have found a few that do work and that I have been successful with.

Most people who are looking for an online business are usually looking for fast money and that's why auto surf programs do so well initially.  Don't get caught up in all the hype, when a new program comes out sit back for a while on the sideline and asses the opportunity.  There are plenty of ways to generate a substantial income online, just be sure to find a program that works for you and meets your needs.

It was a year ago that I attended my first search engine strategies conference.  It was also at this conference that I became a speaker.
Search Engine Strategies and PubCon are undoubtedly the two largest SEO/SEM conferences out there today so of course there's huge attendance and lots of big industry names attending.
There's also a guy there who you may have heard of.  His name is Barry Schwartz and he's from Search Engine Round Table.  I bring his name up because he's found one of the best ways to not only build an ever expanding content base up, but also a way to build quality relevant links.  And it's so simple one begins to wonder why others don't do it.
Before I get into what he's doing let me give you a little history.  He started covering SES a few shows ago and would post summaries of the various seminars he attended at the SearchEngineWatch forum.
His posts were some of the most read posts during the conference.  He soon also began posting longer summaries at his own site.  Also very well read by those of us who couldn't attend the show.
Now he's become "the" reporter for the SES shows wherever they are.  He even went into this one with a plan to cover as many of the sessions as possible, between himself and others known in the SEM industry.  Some of the posts end up at the SEW forums but he also posts many on his own site.
Step one – there's that ongoing content development.
You see, what the folks at SEO roundtable are doing is creating very long, but very detailed summaries of every seminar they attend.  They then post these to their website daily or more often.  Each post occupies it's own static page, and most pages are well linked within the site.
Step two – relevant quality links and lots of them
Now here's the great part.  It is because of this coverage that people have come to realize that this site is the site to go to for SES coverage.  Between this site and the SEW forums you can pretty much get your fill of SES in a very compact version.  (Trust me for some of the sessions, a light summary is much better than sitting through 90 minutes of dry explanations of how ranking algorithms work :) ).
And because people rely on these summaries of the show that they begin to refer others to them.  Either through word of mouth or, more importantly, links.
This is where the relevant quality links kick in.  What is a link to an SEM site from another SEM site worth?  What would you pay to have your competitors link to you with lots of one way links, many from high authority sites?  Because of this article, they even have a link from here.
Plus they get links from Searchenginewatch, in both the forums and the blog entries, not to mention other high profile industry sites.  What's link from Matt Cutt's blog with a photo worth to this site?
You see, this site is building its online reputation the way everyone needs to – by posting relevant timely information that others want to see.  Then the others link to that content in a natural way.
Let me put it to you another way – of the over 3,000 links this site has, how many do you suppose are from content?  More specifically, how many are due to the site's summaries of the various SES shows they've attended?  Links may not be directly to the topics in question.  In fact many are not.
In fact, if you scan through the top 100 links or so listed in Google you see a virtual who's who of the SEO industry. Let me point out a few of the more notable links:  Links from Yahoo Search Blog, as well as the MSDN MSN search blog.  Of course there's many from Searchenginewatch, but also from other industry sites like searchviews.com, seomoz.com and searchenginejournal.com just to name a few.
So what has the site accomplished by attending all the SES shows since late 2003? Well, they've built lots of good content which helps relay their authority status to engines like Google.
Further, they've gotten lots of quality inbound links from high profile related sites that are also considered authorities.  Plus they've also built a reputation for being the place to go to find out about SES which means increased traffic to the site.  Not to mention that they've now probably got a well known brand.
In other words, if someone doesn't already know how to find the site, but they know the name of it, a the person will search on an engine like Google looking for the domain name.  Even if it's ranked #7 or 8 for the search term the site will get the click because the searcher is looking for that brand.
How's that for building quality content and links at the same time?
